What Is Sedentary Work in VA Disability Cases?

By Jackie Schabacker, MA, CRC, LPC, RSW — Honor Bound Evaluations

What Does “Sedentary Work” Mean in VA Disability Claims?

In TDIU decisions, the VA sometimes states that a veteran could perform sedentary work. This term generally refers to jobs involving mostly sitting with minimal physical activity.

Typical Characteristics of Sedentary Work

  • Sitting most of the workday
  • Occasional standing or walking
  • Light lifting (usually under 10 pounds)
  • Desk-based job tasks

Why This Issue Matters

Even sedentary work may be difficult if a veteran experiences chronic pain, concentration problems, fatigue, or other functional limitations.

Tip: Many TDIU appeals focus on whether sedentary work is realistically possible.
